Oklahoma City’s American Slang are blazing a new trail with a timeless sound. Blending Red Dirt and Southern Rock with ‘80s hair metal, the nouveau “Shred Dirt” band have found their voice in a sonically charged, larger-than-life space. They’re undeniably classic and unapologetically brand new, and they’re ready to be the soundtrack for all generations. Comprised of Miller Wilke (vocals), Siggy West (bass), Boston Davis (drums) JC Farmer (guitar) and Preston Reeves (guitar), American Slang formed in 2020 over a shared love of rock’s past and an unquenchable thirst to be part of its present. The band’s five members met as teenagers in their local School of Rock program, and no sooner after they had formed were they playing live gigs to great response. In March 2022 they released their debut single “Gypsy Life,” a song written by Dwight Hamlin of fellow Oklahoman band Wight Lighters. A heated eruption straight out of the gate, “Gypsy Life” wastes no time in capturing American Slang’s essence, with its churning drum beat, fiery electric guitar riffs, and radiant, singalong chorus instantly asserting the band’s unique Shred Dirt sound. “We coined the term ‘Shred Dirt’ out of a collective appreciation of Red Dirt lyrics, a Southern Rock groove, and ‘80s Hair Metal drum beats and guitar riffs that came from the songs we all grew up listening to,” the band shares. “Our parents all had very diverse musical tastes, and we took the most appealing elements from all of those different genres and incorporated them into our songs, our style, and our show.” Success has followed American Slang as they’ve continued to introduce themselves, first with an electrifying cover of “Fever Dog” from Cameron Crowe’s movie Almost Famous, and next with “Alone Again,” the band’s first entirely self-written song – a collaboration with Cody Hanson of Hinder – and one that faithfully showcases their Southern rock roots. The band returned this spring with the emotional power ballad “Last Goodbye” and heavy, in-your-face anthem “Burn It All,” two songs that evoke the spirit of this fast- rising band. American Slang is poised to take the world by storm and bring their Shred Dirt sound to the global stage.
