"Music played at a comfortable volume, and tables were already filling with guests dressed in a mix of disco shimmer and Western flair."

The July women’s brunch at Pelican’s featured a playful theme: Studio 54 Goes Honky Tonk. I pulled on my fringe boots, and my friend arrived in a sequined skirt. From the moment we walked in, the space felt upbeat without being over the top. Music played at a comfortable volume, and tables were already filling with guests dressed in a mix of disco shimmer and Western flair. The setting struck the right balance with just enough energy to feel fun while still being relaxed enough to enjoy the morning.

We checked in at the host stand and were shown to our table, passing groups already seated and chatting over cocktails. Each table had handwritten name cards and a printed menu created by Chef Patrick Street for the occasion. As we settled in, our server arrived with a drink menu and asked if we wanted to try one of the specialty cocktails. They all sounded appealing, but we decided to start with classic mimosas. He gave a quick nod and returned a moment later with our drinks and the first course.

The first course, a salad named Do the Watermelon Crawl, arrived chilled and beautifully plated. It featured watermelon, English cucumber, arugula, garden greens, and a light lime-honey drizzle, all topped with crumbled feta. The flavors were bright and fresh, a thoughtful start to the meal that felt perfect for a summer morning. My friend and I had been deep in conversation, and by the time we looked down, we had eaten every bite.

Our server returned soon after with the second course: Cowboy, Steak Me Away. A seared New York strip was paired with crispy potatoes, roasted pepper hash, bacon, and a perfectly fried egg. This was the dish I had been most looking forward to, and it didn’t disappoint. When I cut into the egg, the yolk ran slowly over the steak, adding richness to every bite. It was a well-composed plate, and we both tucked in without hesitation.

The final course arrived just as we were finishing our last bites. Called Really Love Your Peaches, it was a golden French toast with a hint of vanilla, topped with fresh peaches and a light drizzle of syrup. The dish offered a sweet finish that felt balanced rather than overindulgent. It was satisfying without being heavy, a thoughtful way to close out the meal.

With the last course cleared, we had time to sit back and take in the full experience. Each reservation secures a two-hour seating, which allows the meal to unfold at a comfortable pace. Plates are cleared and courses delivered with quiet efficiency, timed to match the rhythm of the table rather than a preset schedule. Portions are generous and well-portioned for a three-course meal, leaving room to enjoy without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. It’s a format that encourages conversation and makes the outing feel like more than just a meal.

Before leaving, we stopped by the photo booth for a quick snapshot to mark the occasion, then browsed a small selection of theme-inspired merchandise displayed near the entrance. With a glance at our watches, we realized nearly two hours had passed, though it hadn’t felt like it. Between the thoughtful pacing, creative menu, and easy conversation, time moved quietly in the background.

The next women’s brunch at Pelican’s is scheduled for August 24. The theme is South Beach Bash, and reservations can be made at http://popme.nu/ps431. Tickets are $50, with a $10 deposit due at the time of booking. That deposit is applied to the final bill. Specialty cocktails and mimosas will also be available for purchase.
